Auto electrician apprenticeship pathway

You become an auto electrician through a roughly four year apprenticeship: paid work plus the Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology (AUR30320) at TAFE or another RTO. No uni, no ATAR, and you can start straight from school, via a pre-apprenticeship, or as an adult career changer.
The pathway is the classic Australian trade route, but the destination is changing fast. The core structure has not moved: a training contract with an employer, off-the-job training through a registered training organisation, competencies signed off until you are a qualified tradesperson. What has changed is the vehicle. Electric and hybrid drivetrains, high voltage batteries and driver assistance systems mean the electrical specialist is moving from the niche trade to the centre of the industry, and the Certificate III now carries EV, hydrogen and ADAS electives to match.
The qualification: AUR30320
The nationally recognised qualification is the Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology, code AUR30320, listed as current on training.gov.au. It is 32 units: 21 core covering wiring, circuits, batteries, starting, charging, ignition, engine management and diagnostics, plus 11 electives.
The apprenticeship typically runs about four years (often advertised as 42 to 48 months), though competency-based progression in some states can shorten it if you demonstrate the skills earlier.
Auto electrician vs building electrician
These are different trades with different rules. A building electrician does 230 volt fixed wiring and must hold an electrical licence issued by their state. An auto electrician works on vehicle systems and training.gov.au lists no licence attached to AUR30320.
Neither qualification lets you do the other's job. If you want to wire houses, do an electrical apprenticeship. If you want to work on vehicles, machines and increasingly EVs, this is the trade. The EV high voltage space sits in between: it is not building electrical work, but it does need specific training units before you touch it.

- •Direct entry: apply to auto electrical workshops, dealerships, heavy vehicle and mining employers for an apprenticeship, no prerequisite qualification needed
- •Pre-apprenticeship: the Certificate II in Automotive Electrical Technology (AUR20420) at TAFE builds basic skills and makes you a much stronger applicant
- •School-based apprenticeship: start part time in senior school and convert to full time after year 12
- •Group Training Organisation: the GTO employs you, handles wages and training oversight, and places you with host workshops, handy if you cannot find a direct employer or want backup support
- •Adult entry: career changers do the same apprenticeship, usually on adult apprentice rates, and workshop experience or a related trade can earn credit
How the training works
You work full time and attend trade school on day release or block release, depending on the RTO and how remote you are. On the job you learn the trade for real; at TAFE you cover the theory (circuits, schematics, diagnosis method) and get assessed on competencies.
Your employer, you and the RTO sign a training plan, and your state training authority registers the contract. Wages step up each year or as competencies are signed off.
The EV specialisation
This is the part worth planning for. Within AUR30320 you can take electives like AURETH101 (depower and reinitialise battery electric vehicles), AURETH011 (hybrids), battery system inspection units, hydrogen units and ADAS scanning and calibration.
If your workshop touches hybrids or EVs, push to get these into your elective mix. If it does not, look at short courses after you qualify. Depowering tickets are quickly becoming the entry stamp for the growth end of the trade.
Where the work is
Auto electrical workshops and mobile services are everywhere, from capital cities to small towns where the auto sparkie covers half the district. Dealerships cluster in cities and regional centres. Heavy vehicle, plant and mining work concentrates in industrial areas, regional hubs and mine regions, with WA and Queensland big on FIFO and residential mining roles.
Government profile data lists construction, manufacturing, mining and other services as the main employing industries, which tells you this trade is not just about cars.
Honest first-year expectations
You will do the simple jobs on repeat: batteries, globes, terminals, running and taping cable, stripping interiors for installs. The pay is lean in year one and the learning curve is steep, because vehicle electrics punish guesswork.
Stick at it. Somewhere in second or third year the diagrams start making sense, you find your first proper fault solo, and the trade gets genuinely satisfying. Finish the ticket and you hold a skill set the industry is fighting over.
