Cabinet Making Apprentice Hub

Cabinet makers build the fitted and freestanding stuff that goes inside buildings: kitchens, wardrobes, vanities, shop counters, office joinery and furniture. Most of the work these days is manufactured board (melamine, MDF, plywood) cut on panel saws and CNC machines, edge banded, assembled in the workshop, then installed on site. Solid timber skills still matter, but the modern trade is as much about reading drawings, running machines and getting millimetre-accurate results as it is about hand tools.

The apprenticeship runs through the Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology (MSF30322), usually over about four years, mixing paid work in a shop with TAFE blocks or day release. It suits people who like making physical things, can handle repetition early on, and care about the last millimetre. It is mostly indoor workshop work, which is a real plus over the outdoor trades when it is 40 degrees or bucketing down.

How to get in with no experience

The standard route is a four-year apprenticeship: get hired by a cabinet or joinery shop (or through a group training organisation), sign a training contract, and complete the Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology (MSF30322) through TAFE or another RTO while you work. There are no formal entry requirements, so the real hurdle is landing the job: ring shops directly, ask about work experience, look at pre-apprenticeship courses, and check GTO vacancy lists. School students can start through a school-based apprenticeship in most states and convert to full time after year 12. Adults can start at any age, and many shops rate mature-age apprentices for their reliability.

Who it suits

It suits people who are precise by nature, because the whole trade lives or dies on millimetres. You need patience for repetitive production work early on, decent practical maths, and enough care to sand a panel properly when nobody is watching. It is a good fit if you want a hands-on trade but would rather work indoors in a workshop than on a roof in summer. It is a poor fit if you hate routine, cannot stand noise and dust, or want the highest-paying trade on day one: the money is solid but sparkies and some construction trades typically out-earn it. People who love the idea of hand-crafting furniture should go in with open eyes: most jobs are board-and-machine kitchen work unless you deliberately chase custom shops.

What you can earn

For qualified cabinet makers, the Australian Government's Your Career profile lists average earnings around $1,216 per week before tax, and the Jobs and Skills Australia profile for the broader cabinetmakers group shows median weekly earnings of about $1,400. Job outlook

Demand for cabinet makers is steady rather than booming: Your Career rates future demand as stable, and the occupation sits mainly across construction, manufacturing and other services, so work follows home building and renovation cycles. The big structural shift is technology: flat-pack and CNC nesting manufacturing means one modern shop can push out volumes that used to take triple the staff, and imported flat-pack product competes at the budget end. That cuts both ways for a tradesperson: shops increasingly want people who can program and run CNC machines and CAD software, and those digital skills plus install ability are what keep you valuable. Quality custom work, commercial fit-out and installation are harder to automate or import, which is where experienced trades continue to do well.

What apprentices actually do

  • β€’Read plans, workshop drawings and job documentation, and prepare cutting lists from them.
  • β€’Cut and machine components from board products and solid timber using panel saws, CNC machines and static machinery.
  • β€’Edge band, drill, dowel and assemble cabinet carcasses, doors, drawers and furniture parts.
  • β€’Fit hardware: hinges, drawer runners, handles, locks, soft-close mechanisms.
  • β€’Build custom pieces in solid timber using traditional joints and leg and rail construction.
  • β€’Install finished cabinetry on site in kitchens, bathrooms, shops and offices, scribing to walls and floors.

Same trade, different worlds

Same trade, very different day depending on the kind of work your employer does.

Kitchen and joinery shops

This is where most cabinet making apprentices land. Shops that build kitchens, wardrobes, laundries and vanities for builders, renovators and homeowners, mostly out of melamine and other board products.

  • β€’High volume, repeatable work: cut, edge band, drill, assemble, wrap, deliver, install.
  • β€’You will run edge banders, panel saws and often CNC nesting machines within your first couple of years.
  • β€’Install days get you out of the shop and onto renovation sites and new builds.
  • β€’Deadlines are driven by builders' schedules, so weeks can swing between steady and flat out.
  • β€’Great grounding in accuracy and process, but less solid timber work than people expect.

Shopfitting and commercial fit-out

Shopfitters build and install joinery for shops, cafes, pubs, offices, hospitals and schools: counters, wall panelling, reception desks, display units. It is a mix of workshop manufacture and serious site install work.

  • β€’Bigger, more varied jobs than domestic kitchens, often with metal, glass, stone and laminate mixed in.
  • β€’Site installs can mean travel, night work or weekend work when a shopping centre store has to open Monday.
  • β€’You need a construction induction white card because you are regularly on commercial building sites.
  • β€’Pay is often better than domestic joinery, and enterprise agreements are more common on big commercial jobs.
  • β€’Teaches you scribing, site measuring and problem solving, because buildings are never square.

Custom furniture and bespoke work

A smaller slice of the trade: one-off furniture, high-end architectural joinery, marine cabinetry for boats, restoration and specialist solid timber work. Fewer jobs, but the deepest craft skills.

  • β€’More hand tool work, joinery cut by hand or on classic machines, and timber selection actually matters.
  • β€’Small shops, often just a few tradespeople, so you see the whole job from drawing to delivery.
  • β€’Marine cabinetry and coopering (barrel making) exist as niche specialisations under the same Certificate III.
  • β€’Apprenticeships are harder to find and you may need to chase them directly or through a group training organisation.
  • β€’Clients pay for perfection, so tolerances and finish standards are brutal in a good way.

A day in the life (first year)

  • β–ΉStart around 6:30 to 7:00 am in the workshop, machines on, dust extraction running, check the job sheets for the day.
  • β–ΉPull the cutting list for the current job and start breaking down sheets on the panel saw or unloading parts off the CNC.
  • β–ΉEdge band components, drill for hinges and shelf pins, then assemble carcasses with the tradespeople.
  • β–ΉSmoko mid-morning, then back into it: sanding, fitting drawer runners, hanging doors, checking everything against the drawings.
  • β–ΉSome days you load the ute or truck and head out on an install: fitting cabinets, scribing panels to walls that are never straight, fitting kickboards and handles.
  • β–ΉClean down at the end of the day: empty dust extraction, sweep, stack offcuts. Apprentices always do their share of the sweeping.

First-year expectations

  • β†’Expect a lot of sanding, edge banding, drilling the same holes hundreds of times, and cleaning. That is the deal everywhere.
  • β†’You will carry and stack a lot of sheet material. An 18 mm sheet of melamine is heavy and awkward, and your hands will toughen up fast.
  • β†’You will not be trusted on the big machines straight away. Guarding, push sticks and machine inductions come first, and that is for good reason.
  • β†’The maths is real: measurements, tolerances and cutting lists. If you are half a millimetre out on a carcass, doors will not line up.
  • β†’First year pay is set as a share of the trade rate, so money is tight early. It steps up each year or as you prove competencies.
  • β†’Some weeks feel like production line work. Stick it out: the interesting jobs come once the boss trusts your accuracy.

Tools you'll need

Quality tape measure (5 m or 8 m) and a combination square, because the whole trade is measurement.
Marking knife, pencils and a marking gauge for accurate set-out.
Set of bevel-edged chisels (a starter set of 4 is fine) and a way to keep them sharp.
Cordless drill and impact driver, usually the first big purchase, with driver and drill bit sets.
Block plane and a smoothing plane once you start solid timber work.
Quick-release clamps: you can never have too many.
Screwdrivers, utility knife, hammer and a soft mallet.
Hearing protection, safety glasses and P2 dust masks, non-negotiable in a woodworking shop.
Steel cap boots that are comfortable to stand in all day on concrete.
A lockable tool box or tool bag, because workshops are shared spaces.

Common terms

Carcass
The box of a cabinet: sides, top, bottom and back, before doors, drawers and hardware go on.
Edge banding
The strip of material glued to the raw edge of a board panel to seal and finish it, usually run through an edge banding machine.
CNC nesting
Using a computer-controlled router to cut all the parts for a job out of full sheets, arranged (nested) by software to minimise waste.
Cutting list
The list of every part in a job with its dimensions and material, worked out from the drawings before anything gets cut.
Scribing
Trimming a panel or filler to match an uneven wall or floor so the cabinetry looks like it grew there.
Kickboard
The recessed panel under base cabinets that hides the legs, also called a kicker or plinth.
Melamine
Particleboard with a hard decorative face bonded on, the bread and butter material of kitchen and wardrobe manufacture.
MDF
Medium density fibreboard, a smooth engineered board used for doors, panels and painted work. Makes very fine dust, so extraction matters.
Leg and rail
Traditional method for building tables and chairs where legs and rails are joined into a frame, still a core furniture making skill.
Veneer
A thin slice of real timber glued to a board substrate, giving the look of solid timber with the stability of board.

TAFE & study support

The classroom side is the Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology (MSF30322), 25 units covering measuring, drawing (including CAD), cutting lists, machine work and your specialisation electives. Most apprentices attend TAFE or another registered training organisation on block release or one day a week, with the rest learned on the job. Your electives steer you towards kitchens and bathrooms, furniture, wood machining or other streams, usually matching what your employer does. Ask your training provider how they timetable it, because it varies by state and by RTO.

Licensing & qualifications

The apprenticeship qualification is the Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology (MSF30322), and cabinet making itself is generally not a licensed trade: you can work as a qualified cabinet maker in a workshop anywhere in Australia without a licence. The catch is on-site installation and contracting. Training.gov.au notes kitchen and bathroom installers must be licensed in some states, and in Queensland, for example, the QBCC issues a cabinet making licence class for contractors who install, refurbish or repair fitted cabinets on site. Working on construction sites also needs a general construction induction (white card), so check your own state's contractor rules before you start quoting install work.

Common questions

How long does a cabinet making apprenticeship take?

The nominal term is about four years (Queensland lists 48 months for MSF30322). Plenty finish faster because progression can be competency based: prove the skills and you can move up and sign off early. School-based apprentices usually take longer because they are part time while at school.

Cabinet maker, joiner, carpenter: what is the difference?

Rough guide: carpenters build the structure on site, joiners make timber building components like doors, windows and staircases in a workshop, and cabinet makers make furniture and fitted cabinetry like kitchens and wardrobes. The trades overlap at the edges, and plenty of shops do both joinery and cabinet work.

Do I need to be good at woodwork from school?

It helps but it is not required. Employers care more about reliability, care with measurement and a genuine interest. Entry requirements for the Certificate III are officially nil. A pre-apprenticeship certificate or school woodwork gives you a head start and shows you are serious.

Is it all CNC machines now? Will I actually learn woodworking?

Honest answer: in most kitchen shops the machines do the cutting and your craft is in set-out, assembly, problem solving and install. If you want hand skills and solid timber, aim for a custom furniture or high-end joinery shop, or pick furniture stream electives at TAFE. Both paths are real trades, they are just different.

Can I do it as an adult apprentice?

Yes. Anyone 21 or older at the start counts as an adult apprentice under most awards, and adult apprentice rates are typically higher than junior first-year rates. Should I go through a GTO or straight to an employer?

Direct employment means one shop takes you for the whole apprenticeship. With a group training organisation (GTO), the GTO employs you, sorts your wages and training contract, and places you with host businesses, sometimes more than one. GTOs are good if you cannot find a shop yourself or want backup if a host goes quiet. Direct is good if you have found a quality shop you want to stay with.

Is the work hard on your body?

Easier than some outdoor trades, but not soft. You stand on concrete all day, lift sheets and assembled cabinets, and installs involve awkward carries up stairs. Noise and dust are the long-term risks, so wear your hearing protection and mask even when the older blokes do not.

Safety reminders

  • ⚠Machine guarding is life and death in a cabinet shop. Never remove or defeat a guard, use push sticks on saws, and do not use a machine you have not been inducted on.
  • ⚠Wood dust is classified as a carcinogen (nasal and sinus cancers) and causes asthma. Use on-tool extraction, keep the shop's dust extraction running, and wear a P2 mask for sanding and MDF work.
  • ⚠MDF and particleboard dust carry formaldehyde from the resins, another reason extraction and masks are not optional.
  • ⚠Kickback on table saws and panel saws is one of the most common serious injuries. Respect the machine, keep timber controlled and never reach over a moving blade.
  • ⚠Hearing protection every time a machine runs. Industrial deafness creeps up over a career and does not come back.
  • ⚠Manual handling: sheets, stone tops and assembled cabinets are heavy and awkward. Lift in pairs, use panel lifters and trolleys, and set up installs to save your back.
