Plastering is the trade that turns a bare frame into finished walls and ceilings. In Australia it splits into two camps: dry plastering (hanging and finishing plasterboard, also called wall and ceiling lining) and solid plastering (troweling wet render, cement and setting coats onto walls, inside and out). Most apprentices land in the dry side because that is where most of the work is, but solid plastering and rendering is its own skilled world, including heritage restoration.
As an apprentice you earn while you learn, doing a Certificate III at TAFE or another training provider while working full weeks on site. The work is physical and repetitive early on, and the finish standard is brutal, because every flaw shows up once the painter has been through. Get good at it and you have a trade that is in demand in every suburb in the country.

How to get in with no experience
The standard route is an apprenticeship: find an employer (or sign with a group training organisation that places you with host businesses), sign a training contract, and work full time while completing CPC31220 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining for dry plastering or CPC31020 Certificate III in Solid Plastering for the wet side. Get your White Card first, since you cannot work on a construction site without it. If you cannot land an apprenticeship straight away, a pre-apprenticeship such as CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways or a labouring job with a plastering crew is the proven way in, and school students can start through a school-based apprenticeship in most states. The training contract is typically up to four years but progression is competency based, so quick learners can finish earlier.
Who it suits
It suits people who like seeing a finished product every day and take pride in a dead flat wall, because plastering is a finish trade and sloppy work is visible forever. You need a reasonable engine (sheets are heavy, ceilings are overhead work), patience for repetition, and enough self discipline to keep standards up when you are paid by the square metre. It is not a great fit if dust, ladders or repetitive shoulder work are deal breakers, and anyone who wants constant variety may find high volume resi sheeting monotonous. On the upside it has one of the clearest runs into working for yourself of any trade: a ute, a modest tool kit and a good reputation is a viable business.
What you can earn
Once qualified, the Australian Government profile for plasterers (Jobs and Skills Australia, ANZSCO group 3332) lists median full time earnings of around 1,841 dollars a week, and the linked Your Career occupation pages for fibrous and solid plasterers carry the live occupation data, so check the current figure there rather than trusting any static number. Real incomes spread widely because much of the trade is paid on square metre piecework rates, so fast, clean subcontractors out earn wage employees, and enterprise agreement commercial sites pay above award. Job outlook
Demand for plasterers tracks housing and fit-out activity, and both levels of the government data are worth reading: the Jobs and Skills Australia profile shows around 31,600 plasterers employed nationally with future demand rated stable on the Your Career occupation pages. Construction trades have been among the most persistent shortage areas in Jobs and Skills Australia's annual Occupation Shortage List work, and with national housing targets driving residential construction, a qualified plasterer who turns up and finishes cleanly is not short of work in any capital city. Solid plastering is the smaller specialist end (around 4,600 employed), which cuts both ways: fewer jobs advertised, but genuinely scarce skills, especially for heritage restoration.

Same trade, different worlds
Same trade, very different day depending on the kind of work your employer does.
Residential sheeting and renos
New homes, extensions and renovations. Small crews hanging board, stopping joints and running cornice, often paid on square metre rates once qualified.
- β’Hang plasterboard on timber or steel framed walls and ceilings, then stop (flush) the joints in three coats
- β’Run and mitre cornice, patch damage, and line garages, ceilings and wet area substrates
- β’Fast paced: sheeters and stoppers are often separate crews and speed sets the pay
- β’You move house to house, so expect early starts, dusty sites and a lot of loading sheets in and out
- β’Mostly award or subcontract arrangements rather than enterprise agreements
Commercial fit-out ceilings and partitions
Offices, schools, hospitals and shopping centres. Steel stud and track partitions, suspended ceilings, and fire and acoustic rated systems built to spec.
- β’Set out and build non load bearing steel stud walls, bulkheads and shaft walls from the drawings
- β’Install suspended ceiling grids, ceiling tiles and metal furring systems
- β’Fire rated and acoustic systems must be built exactly to the manufacturer specification, and they get inspected
- β’Bigger sites often run under enterprise agreements with higher pay and site allowances
- β’More paperwork, inductions and coordination with other trades than resi work
Solid plastering and rendering
The wet side of the trade: cement render, acrylic texture, hardwall and setting coats, plus heritage and ornamental restoration work.
- β’Mix and apply render and set coats by hawk and trowel, or by projection machine on bigger jobs
- β’External rendering and texture coating on new builds, facades and fences
- β’Heritage work restoring old lath and plaster, mouldings, cornices and ceiling roses is specialist and well regarded
- β’Weather matters: hot wind or rain can wreck a coat, so you learn to read the day
- β’A smaller workforce than dry plastering, so good solid plasterers are hard to find
A day in the life (first year)
- βΉStart around 6:30 to 7:00 on site, unload sheets or mix the first batch, and get the area set up before smoko
- βΉMeasure, mark and cut plasterboard, then lift and screw sheets to walls and ceilings (panel lifters help, shoulders still cop it)
- βΉStop joints and screw holes with base coat, tape, second coat and topping, or lay on render coats and screed them flat
- βΉSand yesterday's topping with the pole sander or dust extraction sander, prime for a level 4 or 5 finish where specced
- βΉKeep the area clean, stack offcuts, and restock compound, tape and screws for the next room
- βΉKnock off mid afternoon on most resi jobs, later if a pour or a program deadline is on
First-year expectations
- βExpect to be the labourer for a while: carrying sheets, mixing compound, sanding, sweeping and stacking. It is how every plasterer started
- βSanding is the job nobody loves and the first year apprentice does a lot of it. Use the dust gear, every time
- βYour body will feel it, especially shoulders, wrists and lower back. Technique and pacing matter more than gym strength
- βYou will be slow at stopping and it will look average for months. Flat and clean beats fast in year one
- βTAFE blocks feel basic early on, but the measuring, plan reading and safety units all get used on site
- βTurn up on time every day, look after your knives and trowels, and ask questions. That is genuinely most of the first year battle
Tools you'll need
Common terms
- Stopping (flushing)
- Finishing plasterboard joints, corners and screw heads with tape and compound in successive coats so the wall looks like one flat surface.
- Hanging
- Fixing plasterboard sheets to the wall or ceiling frame. The crew doing it are often called sheeters or fixers.
- Topping
- The final fine coat of compound over a joint, sanded to a paint ready finish.
- Cornice
- The moulded trim between wall and ceiling. Standard cove is everyday work, ornate profiles turn up in older homes.
- Back-blocking
- Gluing plasterboard offcuts behind ceiling joints to stiffen them and stop cracking. Required on many ceiling layouts.
- Butt joint
- A joint between the non recessed ends of sheets. Harder to hide than recessed edge joints, so placement and technique matter.
- Set coat
- A thin finishing coat of plaster trowelled over render or board to give a smooth hard surface. Solid plastering territory.
- Render
- A cement, lime or acrylic based coat applied to walls, usually outside, then floated, textured or set smooth.
- Screed
- Running a straight edge over wet render between guides to get the coat flat and to an even thickness.
- Furring channel
- Light steel channel fixed to ceilings or walls (often on clips) that plasterboard screws to. Standard in commercial ceilings.
TAFE & study support
Off the job training runs through TAFE or a private RTO while you work under a training contract, usually in blocks or one day a week depending on the provider and state. Dry plasterers do CPC31220 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining (29 units) and solid plasterers do CPC31020 Certificate III in Solid Plastering (20 units). You will need a White Card (CPCWHS1001) before you set foot on site, and many providers want it before enrolment.
Licensing & qualifications
The two nationally recognised trade qualifications are CPC31220 Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining and CPC31020 Certificate III in Solid Plastering, both current on training.gov.au. Licensing is state based. NSW requires a contractor licence for dry or wet plastering jobs over 5,000 dollars in labour and materials, and Queensland has separate QBCC licence classes for plastering drywall and plastering solid, while other states and territories run different rules (Victoria, for example, has no plasterer trade licence for typical jobs but registration kicks in for larger domestic contracts). Always check your own state regulator before contracting in your own right.

Common questions
What is the difference between dry and solid plastering?
Dry plastering (wall and ceiling lining) is hanging plasterboard and finishing the joints, mostly inside. Solid plastering is applying wet mixes, render, set coats and texture, to walls inside and out, including heritage restoration. They are separate apprenticeships with separate Certificate IIIs: CPC31220 for wall and ceiling lining, CPC31020 for solid plastering.
How long does a plastering apprenticeship take?
The training contract is typically up to four years, but progression is competency based, so many apprentices finish the training in around three years and complete the contract early if the employer and training provider sign off. Time served plus proven skills is what moves you up.
Do I need any qualifications to start?
No. Both Certificate IIIs have no entry requirements. You need a White Card to work on site, and a pre-apprenticeship like CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways can help you get picked up and may give you credit, but plenty of apprentices start with nothing but a licence to drive and a good attitude.
Is plastering hard on the body?
Honestly, yes. Ceilings are the tough part: arms overhead, sheets are heavy and sanding is constant. Panel lifters, stilts or platforms, dust extraction and decent technique take a lot of the sting out, and blokes who look after themselves work well into their fifties. It is a trade where working smart beats working hard.
Can I do it as an adult apprentice?
Yes, and it is common in plastering. If you are 21 or older when you start you are an adult apprentice and the award sets higher minimum rates for you than for a junior in the same year. GTO or direct employer, which is better?
Direct means one employer for the whole apprenticeship, which is great if they do varied work. A group training organisation (GTO) employs you and places you with host businesses, so you can see resi, commercial and maybe solid work across the one apprenticeship, and the GTO sorts your pay, super and training paperwork. Neither is wrong, it depends on the employers available near you.
Is there school-based plastering?
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships exist in construction in most states, where you start the Certificate II or III part time while finishing school. Availability depends on your state and on finding an employer, so talk to your school VET coordinator and an Apprenticeship Connect provider about what is running locally.
Safety reminders
- β Dust is the big one. Sanding compound, cutting fibre cement (which contains crystalline silica) and mixing render all put fine dust in the air: use dust extraction, wet methods where possible and a properly fitted P2 respirator
- β Working at heights is daily business: stilts, trestles, scaffolds and elevated work platforms all need the right training, and restricted height scaffold work is actually a unit in the qualification
- β Manual handling injuries end plastering careers: team lift ceiling sheets, use panel lifters and trolleys, and do not muscle 6 metre sheets alone to save a minute
- β Watch services in walls and ceilings: screwing or cutting into live cables or pipes is a real risk, so check before you fix
- β Eyes and skin: wet cement render is alkaline and burns skin, and overhead stopping drops compound in your eyes, so glasses and gloves are not optional
- β Site basics still apply: White Card induction, clean work areas (offcuts underfoot cause most trips) and never pull gear off someone else's scaffold
